Who are the favourites to win the Golden Boot at Euro 2024?

The summer showpiece in Germany is fast approaching and fans, pundits and bookmakers are starting to turn their attention to the 17th edition of the UEFA European Championship. There is already plenty of debate as to who will lift the trophy on 14th July in Berlin, but another market worth keeping an eye on is the running for the Golden Boot. There will a plethora of attacking talent on display this summer with many hoping to fire their nations to glory. We are delighted to present a few of the Golden Boot candidates.

Kylian Mbappé

The Frenchman announced that he is to leave Paris Saint-Germain this summer and the 25-year-old is expected to join Real Madrid to further bolster their attacking threat. However, Mbappé’s first task is to help France to their first European Championship trophy since 2000, when Roger Lemerre’s team beat Italy 2-1 in extra time with a golden goal from David Trezeguet.

That year, the goals were shared amongst Thierry Henry, Zinedine Zidane, Sylvain Wiltord and Trezeguet, but Mbappé is very much the main source of goals amongst the current squad. He proved this at the recent World Cup 2022 in Qatar with eight goals, including a hattrick in vain in the defeat in the final to Argentina, to finish with the Golden Boot. Mbappé will be hoping to make that a double this summer, and that France go one further than in Qatar.

Harry Kane

Regardless of whether it is considered a curse or not, Harry Kane has gone another domestic season without a trophy. It could just be pure coincidence that Bayer 04 Leverkusen embarked on their most stellar season soon after Kane moved to Munich. However, Kane’s attention also turns to the summer showpiece in Germany, where the England captain will attempt to lift the Henri Delaunay Cup in Berlin. Despite FC Bayern Munich falling short in the Bundesliga and Champions League, Kane has still bagged 44 goals in all competitions this season for the Bavarian club. This gives the former Tottenham Hotspur striker a good springboard to continue his rich goalscoring form in Germany this summer.

Cristiano Ronaldo

While the latest odds for Euro 2024 have Mbappé and Kane as the two favourites to win the Golden Boot, a certain Cristiano Ronaldo can never be excluded from the conversation. Ronaldo will lead a star-studded Portuguese squad into what is probably his final major tournament and if it is, he will hope to go out on a high. It remains to be seen what role Ronaldo will play at the tournament, with Gonçalo Ramos emerging as an option to lead the line. However, Ronaldo has started recent matches for his country and the 39-year-old will be hoping to add to his 128 goals for Portugal this summer.
