How Does UCL Knockouts Qualification Work?
Qualification for the UCL Round of 16 occurs in a mini-league format, drawing on the results of group matches. 32 participating clubs fall into eight groups (from A to H), each of which consists of four teams, and the two most powerful clubs in every group secure their places in the knockouts, while the bottom two are eliminated.
If two teams end up having the same number of overall points, tiebreakers are used to determine their rankings. These are the criteria applied by UEFA to identify the qualifying team:
- number of points earned in group-stage games which were played among the clubs in question;
- difference of goals shot in the group-stage games which were played among the clubs in question;
- number of goals shot in the group-stage games which were played among the clubs in question;
- if the teams are still equal after considering the first three criteria, they are reapplied to the matches played among the remaining teams to identify their final rankings. In case the procedure does not give the desired result, the subsequent criteria are taken into consideration;
- difference of goals shot in all group-stage games;
- number of goals shot in all group-stage games ;
- number of away goals shot in all group-stage games ;
- number of wins earned in all group-stage games;
- number of away wins earned in all group-stage games;
- disciplinary points based on the number of red and yellow cards obtained in all group-stage games;
- club coefficient.
When all the qualifying teams will finally settle in December, the clubs finishing third will get their spots in the UEFA Europa League, while the fourth teams will be eliminated from the UEFA competition.
