Can Liverpool Still Make Top Four?

By their incredibly high standards, Liverpool has had a miserable 2022-23 season. The Reds nearly won the lot last term, but they are out of domestic cup competitions and miles behind in the Premier League title race.

Reds Still a Huge Pull

Despite their woes this season, Liverpool remains one of the biggest clubs in the world when it comes to popularity. According to ExpressVPN’s sports streaming infographic, the Merseyside giants are the biggest club when it comes to streaming sports in Britain. They have a sizable lead over Manchester City, Manchester United, Chelsea, and Tottenham Hotspur.

On the field, Liverpool is the most successful English club, winning the European Cup six times. Only Real Madrid and AC Milan have been European champions on more occasions. Jurgen Klopp’s men nearly made it seven last terms, though Real Madrid edged them out in the Paris final to pick up their 14th crown. According to BBC Sport’s stats, Liverpool had 24 shots at Real’s goal but failed to break through their resolute defence.

Liverpool Recovering from Incredible 2021-22 Season?

Compared to this year, Liverpool was exceptional on all fronts in the 2021-22 season. They won the EFL Cup and FA Cup, beating Chelsea on penalties in both Wembley Stadium finals. Along with reaching the UEFA Champions League final, the Reds also pushed Man City in the race for the Premier League title. However, City came from behind to beat Aston Villa on the final day to retain their trophy.

Liverpool put so much into last season, which may have affected their performances this term. Ever since the 2-2 draw with Fulham on the opening weekend, they have looked sluggish and a shadow of their former selves. Looking at the stats on Premier League’s official website, Liverpool has been nowhere near good enough.

Liverpool was out of the title race before it even began. They have been well off the pace as Arsenal and Man City have slogged it out for the first spot, as the Reds have spent most of the season around mid-table. They are out of the EFL and FA Cup and will not win the Premier League this term. They did manage to win the FA Community Shield at the start of the season, but that looks likely to be the club’s only silverware of the 2022-23 campaign.

Will Klopp’s Troops Miss Out on Champions League?

Missing out on next season’s Champions League would be a disaster for Liverpool. Arsenal and Man City look nailed on to finish in the top four, while Man United are going great guns under Erik ten Hag and could join them in next term’s elite European club competition. Newcastle United is also having a fine season, while the likes of Fulham, Brentford, and Brighton & Hove Albion have overachieved.

Despite picking up a few decent results of late, finishing in the top four will be a tall order for Klopp’s boys. Nevertheless, Liverpool will not give up until it is impossible. The next few months are huge for Liverpool’s long-serving German coach, and the pressure will continue to mount on Klopp if Liverpool doesn't rise up the Premier League table.
